Time: 03:15

Chairman: Khalifa Almehairbi

Secretary: Abdulla Alqubaisi

Participants: Saif Almemari & Ahmed Alhamed

Topic: Traffic congestion in Abu Dhabi

Agenda:

1.     How serious is the Problem?

2.    Improving the existing traffic system.

3.    Underground Parking lots.

4.    Synchronize traffic lights.

5.    Building tunnels.

6.    Building bridges.

7.    Public transport.

8.    Recommendations.

The Chairman Khalifa Al Mehairbi opened the meeting at 14:30.

Khalifa Al Mehairbi called the meeting order to discuss the above agenda and he started it by reminding us how serious the problem is.

1-      Underground parking:

Saif suggested building underground parking for each building or property, Ahmed objected to this by mentioning that underground parking is costly therefore he came up with the idea of building parking buildings instead of it. Saif convinced Ahmed because the space above the underground parking can be useful for something else like building facilities or another parking lot.

2-      Improving the existing traffic system:

Khalifa said, how about we improve the existing traffic system by distributing the traffic and roads equally so the cars can move smoothly, moving the the residential areas outside AbuDhabi island for example; Khalifa city A,B, Alshamkha, Mohammad bin Zqayed and Yas Island etc.

3-      Synchronize traffic lights:

Synchronizing the traffic lights was mentioned by Saif as one of the solutions for example AlKhaleej AlArabi street when one traffic light opens you can drive 80km/h therefore, you will pass all signals green until you reach the end of the street at thee corniche.

4-      Building tunnels and bridges:

Ahmed came up with the idea to build more bridges in main streets in the middle of the main island with exits every two blocks to make it easier and faster for the drivers and well distributed and smooth. Also, he suggested adding more tunnels in side streets linked to the main streets; it was tested and applied in AlSaada road and it works perfectly to help those who want to keep going in a straight line while the others need to cross the street without being conflicted with other lines.

5-      Public transportation:

In addition, Abdulla said that public transportation such as buses, metros, subways and trams would be a useful solution to decrease the numbers of vehicles and drivers in streets as long as it was qualified under the supervision of the department of transportation with a weekly maintenance for the vehicles.

In conclusion, we agreed the following:

1 –increase the underground parking lots and attach them with buildings

2- improving the existing traffic system and redistribute it with more lines.

3- synchronizing the traffic lights.

4-build a main bridge in the middle of the city attached with supplemental small bridges.

5 – build more tunnels in the side streets.

6 – increase the amount of transportation facilities: buses, trams, metros and subways.
